V-ŕ-V Playoffs

1989 League Awards!

AMERICAN LEAGUE --

American League Championship Series:

Boston Red Sox
vs.
Kansas City Royals
Preview: The Boston Red Sox enter the ALCS with lofty expectations as their vaunted offense led them to league-best 107-55 record, the best in V-a-V's short existence. Behind the arms of Roger Clemens, Bruce Hurts and Dennis Lamp, all 20 Game Winners, the Red Sox feature a great 1-2 punch of offense and pitching. The Kansas City Royals, on the other hand, were lifted by two players whose never-say-die attitude has lifted Royal's spirits into the playoffs. George Brett, fresh off a .381 league record batting average, and Bret Saberhagen, who posted a 24-5 record, pose a tough combination for opponents. This series looks to be a great one!

NATIONAL LEAGUE --

National League Championship Series:

New York Mets
vs.
San Diego Padres
Preview: The dream season for veteran SP Nolan Ryan is just one series away from reaching the World Series, GM Blake Edwards' goal heading into just his second season. After accomplishing the feats of 300 W and 5000 K in the same week, Nolan now has his sights dead set on a World Series ring, the perfect ending to a storybook career. Standing in his way is the team with best record in the National league at 105-57, the New York Mets. The Mets were led by their surprise pitching staff which featured a 20-Game winner in David Cone, two 18-Game winners in Bob Milacki and Bob Ojeda, and a 16-game winner in Pete Harnisch. This year's team cast away all the negative publicity which came from the Orioles trade at the beginning of the league. In that deal the Mets sent star pitchers Dwight Gooden and Sid Fernández, and stud CF Lenny Dykstra in exchange for Pete Harnisch, Bob Milacki, Joe Orsulak and what eventually became Ken Griffey Jr.

WORLD SERIES--

World Series:

New York Mets
vs.
Boston Red Sox
Preview: Three years removed from the infamous "Buckner" series, the league finds that history tends to repeat itself. This year's World Series features the top two teams in the league in the Boston Red Sox, fresh off a 4-1 series victory over the Kansas City Royals, and the New York Mets, perhaps fatigued a bit after their 4-3 series come-from-behind-victory over the San Diego Padres. Two great offenses face off in our 2nd World Series and really, it's a coin flip. Congrats to both teams for reaching the pinnacle of the league and good luck!
